What Is MobileView Enterprise RTLS Visibility Software?

Worker Safety

Real-time visibility is becoming essential in explosive hazardous and industrial environments, but what does that actually look like in practice?

In the first part of our MobileView Enterprise RTLS Visibility Software Q&A series, we speak with Fuad Nor, Senior Commissioning Engineer, about what MobileView is, who it is designed for, and how it helps organizations track people, assets and critical operational data in real time

From automated mustering to asset tracking and day-to-day site visibility, this overview explains how MobileView supports safer, more efficient operations across industrial environments.

Q: What is MobileView?

A: MobileView is an enterprise-ready Real-Time Location System (RTLS) visibility platform that lets you track, locate, monitor and manage assets and personnel from multiple places via a simple web-browser on desktop, tablet or smartphone.

MobileView supports High Availability, providing full redundancy so that backup system components (server software and hardware) can take over automatically in the event of a failure. So, instead of having a single point of failure, the platform can be configured for High Availability, meaning the RTLS visibility service remains operational even if a server, service, or component goes down. It allows integration with CCTV, Fire & Gas, PAGA and other systems via low level or API interfaces.

Q: Who is MobileView for?

A: Organizations in industrial and hazardous environments that need real-time traceability of people and equipment including oil & gas, chemical, mining, pharmaceutical and more. Knowing where assets are located is critical to streamlining businesses and extracting additional productivity with minimal cost.

Q: What key capabilities does MobileView offer?

A:  Capabilities include:

Automated mustering: Quickly account for personnel during evacuations and emergencies, helping ensure everyone is safely accounted for, a key safety feature for hazardous and industrial environments

  • Real-time tracking: Locate personnel and assets instantly
  • IIoT integration: Connect and use data from diverse devices

Q: What applications come as standard within MobileView?

A: Depending on the client requirements we can include applications such as:

  • Asset management (people & asset tracking)
  • Condition monitoring (e.g., temperature, humidity)
  • Evacuation monitoring & mustering
  • Instant notifier that provides the ability to PUSH alarm notifications to specific people within the business via Pop-Ups emails, text messages, etc.
  • Staff Visibility (a tool that focuses on Staff rather than Assets)
  • API integration to other systems including bed management, CCTV, Fire & Gas, PAGA etc
  • Data Warehousing to allow third party dashboarding and analytics of the tracking and location data collected by MobileView which can then be utilized by existing business intelligence platforms.
  •  MobileView maintains a full audit trail of system activity, allowing users to review events after they occur and understand what happened, when it happened, and which assets or personnel were involved.

MobileView also includes a very powerful event engine that provides for Automated triggers, these are rules-based alerts and events based on location, status (people in Red Zones or exclusion zones) Over-population, too many people in a Zone or too many people and not enough supervisors within an area. This tool is extremely flexible, examples of this include:

  • Reporting: Standard and custom reporting options, including utilization and status history. MobileView can provide reports on almost any function or its operation – from Tag Battery Status reports through to over population of Muster Points, demonstrating the flexibility of the platform.
  • Mobile accessibility: Works via almost any web browser on phones and tablets, which means that during a Muster or Emergency event the ERT (Emergency Response) team can carry a Tablet and locate and identify any person who has not arrived at a muster point. As the tablet has a wireless connection, they can also carry it during any rescue event that may occur if an Emergency Call button or Man Down alarm is generated.

Q: How does MobileView track people and assets?

A: MobileView delivers real-time visibility by combining location and status data from tracking tags and the supporting infrastructure across a site. MobileView and the supporting software can use WiFi, LoRaWAN and LTE devices  as the connectivity mechanism. It can also bring together data from multiple sources, including Extronics  tags, third party tags, Bluetooth Devices, Wirepas Devices and almost any third-party device, to visualize location, determine status and condition data in real time.

Within Extronics (BARTEC’s Connectivity & IoT brand) deployments, the primary data sources are typically our own iTAG devices, such as the iTAG X20 (non-GPS) and iTAG X30 (GPS), iTAGX40 (LoraWAN & GPS) and the iTAGXM (Android app) which provide accurate tracking of personnel. For assets, solutions include the iTAG XB10 ( Intrinsically Safe BLE, Wirepas, Quuppa Tag), XB30 (Intrinsically Safe BLE Asset Tag) and XB40 (Intrinsically Safe BLE, Wirepas and Quuppa Anchor). Importantly, the backhaul network is critical. So please talk to us about this before deciding on the technology you use for your Tracking (RTLS) solution.

Q: How can MobileView provide accurate location data?

A: Depending on the site we use three methods of location determination. The first (typically for onshore applications) would be GPS, the second would be BLE trilateration, and the third would be Wi-Fi trilateration. We normally enhance the location accuracy in areas where GPS is unavailable by using iTAG XB anchors together with the ELE (Extronics Location Engine). The ELE is a software engine that processes signals from the tags and determines which location source is the most accurate and then passes that to MobileView to display, enabling reliable real-time positioning within almost all industrial environments.

Q: How does MobileView support safety in hazardous environments?

A: From a safety perspective, I personally consider Zone 0 certification of the tags and BLE beacons to be the most vital component. This certification allows them to be used in almost any hazardous application. The second would be the key safety capabilities of MobileView, and its automated mustering. During an emergency evacuation, organizations need to know quickly and accurately who has safely reached a muster point.

MobileView can automatically detect when personnel reach designated muster locations, the quantity at each muster point and who, thus providing real-time visibility of who has been accounted for. This removes the need for manual headcounts and significantly improves emergency response times.

Q: How does MobileView help during normal day-to-day operations?

A: The platform allows teams to quickly locate personnel, equipment and critical assets across a site in real time. A simple example of this is one customer who has tagged the ladders on the site so the teams who use them can identify where ladders are currently located, if they are in use and if they are the correct height for the task required. That company have seen a marked productivity increase from these teams as they were travelling all over a site (1km x 2km) looking for the correct ladder. I know this may seem extreme but it’s reality. Time costs money, and if we can assist in locating assets quickly and efficiently, we can help reduce downtime, improve workforce performance, and ensure teams have the right equipment available when they need it.

By also knowing where people are on a site (especially in onshore applications which are typically large and have multiple buildings, processes and hazard zones we can support the monitoring of supervisor to worker ratio’s, provide data to monitor worker fatigue, hours on site, time in special hazard zone etc. and then put events (alarms) in place to notify any time of personnel quantity breach in the area.

By making it easier to find the right people or equipment when they’re needed, organizations can save both time and operational costs while improving productivity.

Q: How does MobileView improve workflows and safety?

A: As mentioned above, by automating alerts, triggering actions, and providing real-time visibility of people and assets, MobileView helps reduce downtime, find equipment and resources, whilst improving safety and productivity. For example, in an underground LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) storage facility, the system is used to enable Ventilation on Demand; automatically turning ventilation fans on when workers entered an area and off when the last worker left, reducing costs while ensuring a safe working environment. MobileView Enterprise RTLS Visibility Software helps industrial teams operating in hazardous areas, where potentially explosive atmospheres may be present, improve safety, efficiency and visibility by tracking people, assets, and operational data in real time.

From automated mustering to day-to-day asset tracking, it gives organizations working in these high-risk environments the insight they need to respond faster, support safer decision-making, and work smarter.
